The first ever commercial release of a burning 1962 Maida Vale session, this is a lost treasure of a recording. It features Shake Keane on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on double bass, and the solid-as-ever Bobby Orr on drums.

シャバカ・ハッチングス、ヌバイア・ガルシア等の目覚ましい活躍で俄然、脚光を浴びる UKブラック・ジャズ。その歴史を辿ると必ずたどりつく伝説的ミュージシャンのひとりにジョー・ハリオットがいる。1928年ジャマイカのキングストン生まれ。数多くの音楽家を生み出したカトリック学校アルファ・ボーイズ・スクール出身、アメリカ人チャーリー・パーカーの演奏に感銘を受けてアルト・サックスをメイン楽器としている。

この度日本特別仕様盤としてリリースが決定したハリオットの『ジャズ・フォー・モダンズ』は、1962年にBBCのために録音した作品で、音質、内容ともに極めて上質なクインテットによる演奏を収めたもの。共演メンバーはシェイク・キーン(トランペット、フリューゲルホーン)、パット・スマイス(ピアノ)、コールリッジ・グッド(ベース)、そしてボビー・オー(ドラム)といった伝統的なジャズにどっぷり浸ったオーソドックスな面々。

収録曲の「Shepherd’s Serenade」は、ハリオットの旧友でジャマイカ出身のジャズ・トランペッターのディジー・リースによってジョー・ハリオット・グループのために書かれた曲。そして、リースによるもう一つの楽曲「Variations of Monk」は、当時活躍していたレジェンド、セロニアス・モンクに捧げられた。コード・チェンジは昔のスタンダード「Blue Lou」を思わせるが、ハリオットたちの演奏に乗るソロは、自由で直球だ。最後のナンバー「Tonal」では、ハリオット自身が考案したジャズ・スタイル、”フリー・フォーム”が用いられている。この曲は通常のジャズの形から始まるが、それに続く即興のソロはどこまでも自由であり、テーマに沿った即興ではなく、空想を巡らせた世界に我々を招いてくれる。そのため、リズム・セクションは緊張でいっぱい。その即興はソロリストによって気ままに演奏されるため、結果それに付随し、ミュージシャンらの演奏も、彼ら自身が想像していなかったものになる。

コートニー・パインやゲイリー・クロスビーからも尊敬を集めたジョー・ハリオット。 “ブリティッシュ・モダン・ジャズ”というウェブサイトには、コールリッジ・グッドのこんな発言が載っている。「ジョーは自滅的なところがあった。だが彼の演奏は人々の心をしっかり掴んだ。あいつの音楽は、絶望的なまでに愛を求めていたんだ」。
